Dr Mustafa Farouk, a nutrition technologist from New Zealand, is convinced that his meat chocolate will be a big hit. After all, it is 50% beef, which means it is rich in protein. He pitched the idea to a boutique chocolate maker, who got excited and started looking for the best ways to combine the two. Eventually, they discovered that the best way to combine the meat was to grind it into a paste and then combine it with the chocolate.
"It''s no secret that meat can be eaten in many different forms, but we didn''t know if we could persuade people to eat just chocolate. If you tasted our chocolate, you wouldn''t know what you were eating."
Chocolate, he believes, completely cancels out the taste of meat. "The chocolate manufacturer is quite enthusiastic about the idea, so it makes sense that we joined forces and went to market. Once people realise the benefits of this chocolate, it will be a bestseller."
Of course, there is also a financial side to the story: for a kilo of beef used in the chocolate, the producer has to pay around €15, but then a single cube of chocolate costs €1.3, which promises a fat profit. Of course, this is only the beginning. Farouk is already testing new recipes with mutton and venison to see if they are as suitable for mixing with chocolate as beef. They have already made a dairy-free beef ice cream which is said to be very tasty.
