Condensation on the cake, now what?

  • Reading time Reading time: 3 minutes
condensation on the cake now what

Do you find that the decorations on the cake get a bit soft and the coloured balls lose their colour? Yes, it''s called condensation.

Condensation on a cake can be a frustrating problem, especially if you have put a lot of time and effort into baking and decorating the cake. But it''s not all bad. By taking a few steps, you can prevent condensation from forming on your cake and help it stay looking fresh.

Condensation on cake is caused by moisture that forms on the surface of the cake. This usually happens when a cooled cake is placed at room temperature or when a cake is kept in a humid environment. As the cake cools, the moisture in the cake can condense on the surface when the cake is heated back up to room temperature.

If the cake is stored in a humid environment, for example in a refrigerator or in a closed container, moisture may accumulate on the surface of the cake and form water droplets. Condensation may make the cake decoration look unattractive. Although this generally does not affect the taste or texture of the cake, we would still prefer it not to happen.

1. Prevent condensation on the cake: Let the cake cool well.

One of the most important things you can do to prevent condensation on cake is to make sure that the cake is completely cooled before storing it. If you store a warm cake in an airtight container or wrap it in plastic wrap, moisture can be trapped in the container or wrap, causing condensation.

To avoid this, allow the cake to cool completely before wrapping it. Before wrapping, the cake can be left uncovered for a while to release any residual heat.

2. Prevent condensation on the cake: Use a leak-proof container.

When storing the cake, it is important to use an airtight container or wrap the cake tightly in plastic wrap. This will help to prevent moisture from entering and condensation forming on the surface of the cake.

Make sure that the container is completely sealed to prevent air or moisture from entering. If you are using plastic wrap, you can double wrap the cake with it to keep it tightly sealed.

3. Prevent condensation on the cake: store the cake in a cool, dry place.

Temperature and humidity can affect the formation of condensation on the cake. To prevent this, store the cake in a cool, dry place.

Do not store the cake in a humid place such as a cellar or garage as this may increase the likelihood of condensation forming on the surface of the cake.

4. Prevent condensation on the cake: Use a cake transfer container.

If the cake has to be transported, use an appropriate cake transfer container. Dedicated transfer containers are designed to allow air flow, which can prevent moisture build-up on the surface of the cake.

When using a cake transfer container, make sure that the cake is indeed completely cooled before placing it in the container.

5. Prevent condensation on the cake: wipe off any water droplets that form.

If condensation appears on the cake, the most important rule is: don''t panic! Unwanted moisture can be easily removed by gently wiping the surface of the cake with a paper towel.

Be careful not to damage the decorations or icing on the cake. If the condensation is particularly strong, you may need to remove the cake from the container or wrapper and leave it in the air for a while before drying it with a paper towel. If you decide to decorate with coloured beads or ''sprinkles'', we suggest that you place them on the cake just before serving.
