Where most fairy tales end, ours is just beginning. A long, long time ago - 1960 to be precise - Guy and Lilian Foubert founded a small family business named after a combination of their first names. And the success story of Guylian, the then-unknown Belgian chocolate brand, began... Production was initially based in their home, and they sold their products to local chocolatiers.
And they lived happily ever after...
Word of the divine taste of their chocolate spread more and more over time, and the company grew and gradually expanded into foreign markets - Belgian GuyLian chocolate, which had humble, cautious beginnings, has now gone global. And more than successfully.
This is evidenced by the fact that GuyLian was bought out by a North Korean company in 2008 for a whopping USD 164 million, bearing in mind all the time that it all started in someone''s home kitchen.
The story of GuyLian Belgian chocolate, or the Fouberts, is thus a story about how anything is possible - even fairy tales.
Famous chocolate shells and seafood
You''d probably be hard pressed to find a person who doesn''t know about the famous chocolates made up of shell-shaped pralines and seafood. It is probably one of the most famous products from GuyLian Belgian chocolate. Here, dark chocolate is combined with white and milk chocolate to create a wonderful harmony of flavours, which is finally rounded off by the chocolate-hazelnut filling.
Where most fairy tales end, ours is just beginning.
The taste of GuyLian Belgian chocolate is a taste of tradition that evokes memories of childhood for many - but also a taste that contains a pinch of modernity, reminding us that this is chocolate that has transcended a specific time and place and become practically eternal. We should also mention the neat packaging in which GuyLian products are packaged. We must remember that we eat with our eyes first, so the aesthetic element is also an important part of the experience.
Chocolate record breaker
Belgian GuyLian chocolate also boasts a special record, which earned it an entry in the Guinness Book of Records in 2005. Antoine Bouffioux used more than 50 000 shell-shaped pralines made from this chocolate, weighing just under 2 tonnes in total, to create the largest chocolate sculpture in the shape of an Easter egg, more than 8 metres high. The achievement can also be seen as a kind of tribute to the Fouberts, who started from practically nothing and, with a great deal of patience, diligence and culinary know-how, created one of Belgium''s most recognisable chocolate brands.
