According to the Washington Post, 7% of all American adults believe that chocolate milk comes from brown cows.
For the last decade, US researchers in agriculture, nutrition and education have been finding that many American households are agriculturally illiterate, to say the least. They do not know where and how food is grown, how it gets to the shops and, even in the case of chocolate milk, how certain foods are put together.
A study commissioned and carried out by the Department of Agriculture in the early 1990s showed that 20%, or 1 in 5, of American adults did not know that hamburgers were made from beef.
According to the USDA (US Department of Agriculture), many Americans even believe that the most popular fruit in America is ''orange juice'' and one of the most popular vegetables is French fries or processed, deep-fried French fries.
