You have probably tried a Kraš product at least once in your life, and it is even more likely that these products are with you practically every day, as they are one of the most popular brands of sweet treats in Slovenia.
Dessert with a touch of nostalgia
The Croatian company Kraš is a company with more than a century of tradition, dating back to 1911, when Union founded what is now the oldest industrial chocolate production in South-Eastern Europe. After merging with Bizjak and a few other smaller chocolate companies, the company took on the name Kraš in 1950 and has kept it to this day. The name is dedicated to the memory of Josip Kraš, a partisan fighter who died in World War II.
The products grouped under the Kraš brand have acquired an almost cult status in our country.
Today, the company produces around 33 000 tonnes of different confectionery products a year, and its products are not only extremely widespread in the former Yugoslavia, but are known all over the world. Indeed, it is not insignificant to note that as much as half of the company''s production is exported, and Kraš chocolate and other Kraš products have even made their way to Saudi Arabia. Although the recipes for their popular products are a closely guarded secret, it is safe to assume that they also contain a special ingredient that gives them an almost timeless quality. For many people, Kraš products are the confectionery they grew up with, and perhaps now watch their children get excited about. The sophisticated taste is thus rounded off with a pinch of nostalgia - the ingredient that "links the generations" ...
Chocolate Kraš and other sweet treats
Animal Kingdom
Combining sweet pleasures with the acquisition of new knowledge about animal species, the milk chocolates of the Animal Kingdom line have almost become a Kraš trademark. Chocolate accompanied by pictures of animals has become extremely popular with the youngest children. Patiently collecting stickers and filling up the album is followed by a sweet prize - a pack of Kraš delicacies. The Animal Kingdom is also one of the oldest Kraš products, with production starting in the 1930s and the famous albums appearing in 1956.
Bajadera
Kraš''s famous Bajadera candy is also more than 60 years old. The complex production process, once carried out by hand, is certainly paying off, as the ''ice cubes'' have gained many followers over the years. The Bajadera, which is best enjoyed chilled at 18-20 degrees Celsius, is even one of the most popular Krás products in Slovenia. While the ingredients used to make it are well known (sugar, water, almonds, margarine, edible chocolate and milk), the whole process is still a secret, so ''home-made experiments'' never produce exactly the same taste of these famous pralines...
Griotte
High-quality dark chocolate filled with sour cherries in alcohol - a simple combination at first glance, but one that awakens even the most stunted palate. Griotte, a praline confectionery made from a recipe that is at least 90 years old, is certainly one of Kraško''s most important ''hits''. The many imitations of this product available today are hardly a match for the original. Perhaps one of Kraša''s secrets is his own cherry orchard, but an important factor in achieving the final taste and texture is certainly the carefully measured ''resting'' period of the pralines before they are ready for sale.
Dorina
Available today in 15 different flavours,Dorina is one of Kraško''s newer products (first launched in 1996), but it is the result of more than a century of expertise by chocolate masters who were among the pioneers of this sweet craft on a global scale, and certainly pioneers in the field in South-Eastern Europe. Dorina thus combines tradition with modern production processes, and is slowly but surely gaining cult status.
Ki-Ki
One of the most famous candies in the whole of the former Yugoslavia can certainly be counted among the Kraše "fruit caramels" from the Ki-Ki line. The slogan used to market the product, ''Bilo kuda Ki-Ki svuda'', has also become extremely well-known. The new, revamped line of these candies, popular with all generations, is completely free of artificial flavourings and colourings, but retains the characteristic taste. Ki-Ki caramels, which evoke memories of childhood for many, can thus be enjoyed without guilt.
Home
Expecting visitors and not sure what to offer your guests? With Domaćica biscuits, whose story began in 1957, you''ll be hard pressed to miss. It is one of the products of Kraško that has become practically indispensable in Slovenian homes since its creation. More than just biscuits, as they symbolise the safe shelter of the home and the carefree companionship of loved ones, Domaćica biscuits are one of the most popular snacks to enjoy with coffee, or just when you want to indulge your taste buds in a tried-and-tested treat...
