Women''s Day has been celebrated for more than a century
International Women''s Day is celebrated on 8 March to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women and to call for gender equality.
It was initiated by the German feminist and socialist Clara Zetkin and first celebrated in 1911 in Austria, Germany, Switzerland and Denmark. Today, it is celebrated every year in around 100 countries in addition to Slovenia.
The celebration of Mother''s Day is linked to local customs. It is another holiday dedicated to women, celebrated all over the world. Unlike Women''s Day, however, it is not celebrated on the same day everywhere, but each country sets its own date, most often between March and May - in Slovenia, we have set 25 Marchas the date .

Just as different countries celebrate it on different days of the year, the way it is celebrated or the traditions vary from country to country and have different meanings, as the celebrations are linked to different events - religious or historical. On this day, we pay tribute to our mothers, as well as to motherhood and the impact of mothers on society as a whole. It was first celebrated in the USA in 1910 and has been celebrated in Europe since the First World War.
In addition to the name of the holiday itself, many countries have carried over from the USA the custom of presenting women with gifts and flowers, especially carnations.
