Waffles for breakfast

waffles for breakfast

Originating in Belgium, waffles are made from dough that is baked in a special baking tray. This is the only way to ensure that the waffles are baked and that the outside is crispy while the inside remains soft and fluffy. They are usually served with syrup and butter, but the waffle can also be topped with various other ingredients such as whipped cream, fruit, icing sugar or spreads.

1. What are waffles and what types are there?

One of the most popular types of waffle is the Belgian waffle. The Belgian waffle is made of dough and is based on yeast. It is, of course, usually larger and thicker than the other types of waffle we are more familiar with.

Another popular type is theLiege waffle, which is made from a dough rich in sugar pieces that caramelise during baking, giving the waffle its unique sweetness. The mixture for the waffles will be thicker, but the waffles themselves are sweeter.

Brussels waffles are similar to Belgian waffles, but thinner and with a lighter texture. They are also made from yeast-based dough and are usually served with syrup and butter.

Stuffed waffles can also be filled. Stuffed waffles are usually filled with a variety of sweet or savoury fillings. They can be filled with cream, fruit, chocolate or made into a savoury snack by adding meat and cheese.

Increasingly, waffles shaped like a cone are also becoming popular. They are often filled with ice cream or other sweet toppings.

2. How do you prepare waffles?

While waffles are a dish that does not require any special pastry skills, it is still a good idea to follow the tips and a trick or two when preparing them. We''ve written down some of the most important ones below:

Use the right type of dough. If you are making real traditional Belgian waffles, use a yeast-based dough. If you are making classic American waffles, use a baking powder-based batter.

Do not over-mix the batter. Over-mixing the batter can result in hard and dense waffles. Stir the batter just long enough to bring the ingredients together.

Preheat thewaffle tray to ensure that the waffles bake evenly and do not stick to the tray.

Watch the amount of batter. There should not be too much batter in the baking tray and again not too little. BAM tip: once you have filled all the holes in the baking tray with the waffle batter, you have enough batter.

Waffles for several people? Don''t panic! If you''re making waffles for a crowd, reheat them in the oven before serving, and keep the temperature on low. This will keep the waffles warm and crispy.

3. Can I make waffles without a baking tray?

Waffles are a versatile dish that can be enjoyed at any time of the day, but they are still the most popular breakfast or snack food. They are easy to prepare and can be made at home. We usually use a special waffle baking tray. But can you make them without a baking tray? You can.

There are two ways to prepare them:

  • On the stove: Heat a non-stick pan over a medium heat. Pour the waffle batter into the pan and use a spatula to spread it evenly over the surface. Bake the waffles for about 2-3 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown.
  • Preheat the oven to 220°C. Pour the waffle batter into a greased baking tray. Bake for about 8 to 10 minutes or until the waffles are golden brown.
